BUNGALE
VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT
COMMITTEE
Grant: $250 to start a beekeeping project
Group size: 31 members
Location: Bungale Village, Kilifi District, Coast Province
Bungale village is in the poorest constituency in Kenya.
There is NO road to their village as seen in the fact that bushes and shrubs
have to be cut in order to let our vehicle reach their village every time we
visit them. This group is incredibly far away from all government and
non-governmental services to the extent that, in the words of the group
chairman ‘our Member of Parliament, area chief and even sub chief have never
seen this place’. This isolation has built a great deal of self-reliance in the
community but is also a serious contributing factor to their poverty.
Rasilimali gave them a grant to start a beekeeping project that is still on
going. Community members support the group and project because they see
these as a viable means through which they will develop themselves. Rasilimali
intends to continue to support them by continuing to invest in the development
of their social capital and helping them to build basic skills that will allow
them to manage their current project well and improve their ability to access
other sources of both government and non-governmental funds. This is a group
that truly stands to benefit from our engagement because everyone else has
neglected them due to the sheer remoteness of their location. Moreover, the
group has positive leadership that injects optimism and an attitude of gratitude
into how the community conducts itself. Their future plans include expanding
their water pan and starting horticultural activities.
